Murv Jacob Art Show & Sale
May 4-30, 2011

Murv Jacob, probably the best known of Oklahoma’s illustrators,  has worked on over 100 book and video projects for Time-Life, National Geographic, Bantam, Dell, Harper Collins, St. Martins, O. U. Press,  and many others. He has so far completed eleven illustrated storybooks for University of New Mexico Press with his wife of twenty years, Deborah Duvall, who wrote the stories.

Jacob has pursued an active 45-year art career, starting on the hippie streets of San Francisco in 1965. There the twenty-year-old Jacob was “lucky enough to get to do artwork for the Grateful Dead and the beat poet extraordinaire Michael McClure.I met and hung out with Carlos Santana, Jerry Garcia, Janis Joplin, and Allen Ginsburg. There I saw friends of mine from the neighborhood get very famous, very fast. I began to understand at an early age that with hard work and creativity anything was possible.”

For twenty years Jacob, a descendant of Kentucky Cherokees, has focused a lot of energy on the characters from traditional Cherokee animal stories and they are well represented in the 40 paintings in his Canebrake show.

Mickel Yantz Art Show and Sale

Wooden Reflections, New Sculptures by Mickel Yantz is a new exhibition that provides a contemporary look at nature using traditional fine craft techniques. On view at The Canebrake from March 2 through April 2, 2011, the exhibition presents pieces showing the juxtaposition of fine woods complimented together with media carved designed glass.

The exhibition explores the symbolism of nature and life. “Many of my pieces use leaves in the design,” said artist Mickel Yantz. “Leaves represent the seasons and the cycle of life. I like using leaves carved into the glass which reflects and shadows the past of the wood I use in my sculptures. I try to pay homage to traditional woodworkers in my work while spinning a contemporary design with the inset carved glass.”

About Mickel Yantz:

After spending 25 years in Washington State, he moved to Oklahoma in 2004. He has multiple degrees in Art, Anthropology and Museum Studies. He is currently the Curator for the Cherokee Heritage Center in Tahlequah, OK. For more information please visit http://mickelyantz.com or email at imyantz@yahoo.com.
